The U.S. Coast Guard located and rescued a family of three who had been missing for seven days after their boat engine failed in the western Pacific Ocean. The family, consisting of two men and one woman, was found off the coast of Chuuk State in the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) on April 6, 2026, according to a Coast Guard statement on April 7.
The trio had departed from Fananu Island within the FSM archipelago on March 30, intending to travel a short distance to nearby Murillo Island on a 23-foot skiff. Their vessel’s engine failure prevented them from reaching their destination, and they were reported overdue.
Search and rescue operations spanned 14,000 square nautical miles in challenging sea conditions, with waves reaching up to 10 feet. The search was coordinated by the U.S. Coast Guard Joint Rescue Sub-Center in Guam and District Oceania, which deployed a Hercules aircraft and diverted the cutter Midgett from its patrol mission to assist in the efforts.
The Coast Guard located the family in the early hours of April 6, safely recovering them and transporting them by helicopter to Chuuk State for onward travel back to Fananu Island. None of the rescued individuals suffered injuries during their week adrift at sea.
U.S. Ambassador to the Federated States of Micronesia Jennifer Johnson praised the rescue operation, highlighting it as a demonstration of the close partnership between the United States and FSM under the Compact of Free Association. “This mission exemplifies the spirit of cooperation and mutual support at the heart of the Compact,” she said.
Why it matters
The successful rescue underscores the importance of coordinated multinational search and rescue efforts in the vast Pacific Ocean, where remote island travel poses risks due to sudden mechanical failures and challenging sea conditions. It also highlights the operational readiness of U.S. Coast Guard assets and their commitment to regional safety and humanitarian assistance.
Background
The Federated States of Micronesia is an island nation in the western Pacific Ocean northeast of Papua New Guinea. The Compact of Free Association between the United States and FSM provides for U.S. support in defense and emergency response, including search and rescue operations. The Coast Guard routinely patrols this strategic region to safeguard maritime safety for local communities and U.S. partners alike.
