Brian Hooker Describes Wife’s Disappearance in Bahamas in Messages to Friend

Brian Hooker, husband of missing Michigan resident Lynette Hooker, sent messages to a friend describing her disappearance during a nighttime boating incident in the Bahamas, according to CBS News. Lynette has been missing since Sunday, and Bahamian authorities have detained Brian Hooker for questioning, though he has not been charged.

In messages reviewed exclusively by CBS News, Brian Hooker told his friend Daniel Danforth that after Lynette apparently fell overboard, she tried swimming back to their sailboat but was quickly separated from him by strong winds at sundown. Hooker said he spent about seven hours paddling with one oar until he reached shore on a nearby island where he sought assistance.

Bahamian police reported that Brian Hooker arrived at Marsh Harbor Boat Yard at 4 a.m. Sunday and informed someone there that his wife was missing, triggering authorities’ involvement. Hooker said powerful ocean currents swept Lynette away, along with the boat keys, disabling its engine and limiting his ability to search for her.

Brian Hooker’s attorney, Terrel Butler, confirmed that Hooker was arrested Wednesday night and can be held up to 48 hours for questioning, with a possible extension to 96 hours. Butler said Hooker denies any wrongdoing and has been cooperating fully with the investigation while focusing on continuing the search for his wife.

Questions Raised by Friend and Family

Daniel Danforth, a longtime boating acquaintance of the couple, expressed concerns over inconsistencies between Brian Hooker’s account and media reports. Danforth noted that Hooker’s messages described Lynette swimming “casually” toward the sailboat, whereas police described her as swept out to sea. Danforth also questioned why Hooker’s phone was working and social media active during the search, and why the couple was reportedly missing their boat keys.

Lynette Hooker’s daughter, Karli Aylesworth, has voiced doubts about Brian Hooker’s narrative, especially regarding how Lynette might have had the boat keys since Brian was normally in charge of them. Aylesworth is seeking further clarity on the events surrounding her mother’s disappearance.

Incident During Brian Hooker’s Arrest

Hooker’s attorney reported that during the arrest, Brian Hooker fell into the water and was rescued by police officers. Butler described the arrest as a traumatic experience for Hooker, who was handcuffed and asked to disembark a vessel when he fell overboard.

Why it matters

The case remains active as authorities investigate Lynette Hooker’s disappearance under unclear circumstances. Brian Hooker’s detention and inconsistent accounts have drawn scrutiny, underscoring ongoing challenges in resolving missing persons cases involving marine environments. The investigation’s outcome will be critical for Lynette’s family seeking answers and for law enforcement efforts in the Bahamas.
