Kamala Harris Says She Is Considering a 2028 Presidential Run

Former Vice President Kamala Harris revealed on April 10, 2026, that she is considering running for president in 2028. Speaking at the National Action Network conference in Manhattan, Harris responded directly to a question from Rev. Al Sharpton, stating, “Listen, I might. I’m thinking about it.”

Harris detailed her experience in the role, emphasizing her time spent close to the presidency. “I served for four years being a heartbeat away from the presidency of the United States. I spent countless hours in my West Wing office, footsteps away from the Oval Office. I spent countless hours in the Oval Office, in the Situation Room. I know what the job is. And I know what it requires,” she said.

Reflecting on her recent nationwide travels, Harris criticized the current political landscape. She remarked, “I’ve been traveling in the country the last year, I’ve been spending a lot of time in the South and many other places. And the one thing I’m really clear about also is, the status quo is not working, and hasn’t been working for a lot of people for a long time.”

Harris was Joe Biden’s vice president from 2021 to 2025 and became the Democratic presidential nominee in 2024. She lost that election to former President Donald Trump. Prior to her tenure as vice president, Harris unsuccessfully sought the Democratic nomination in 2020 before being selected by Biden as his running mate.

Since her 2024 defeat, Harris has maintained a relatively low public profile. She declined to run for governor of California last year, which sparked speculation that she might be preparing for another presidential campaign.

Why it matters

Harris’s potential 2028 campaign would mark her third bid for the presidency, underscoring her continued influence within the Democratic Party. Her consideration signals ongoing national political shifts and highlights opposition to the current political status quo, particularly in the American South and other regions she has recently visited.

Background

Kamala Harris made history in 2020 as the first woman, the first Black person, and the first person of South Asian descent to be elected vice president. Her position as Biden’s running mate placed her directly in the line of succession, and her loss in the 2024 presidential election interrupted what could have been a rare instance of a vice president succeeding to the presidency through election.
