The role of AI engineer has become the fastest-growing job title for young workers in the United States, according to a recent LinkedIn analysis. The company examined millions of profiles and identified that from 2023 to 2025, employers posted 639,000 AI-related job openings nationwide, including 75,000 specifically for AI engineers.
LinkedIn’s head of economics for the Americas, Kory Kantenga, highlighted that the technology sector leads in hiring AI engineers, followed by financial services. Additionally, the role attracts employers in defense contracting, academia, and consulting. AI engineers are tasked with building and maintaining AI products—such as AI agents and Large Language Models (LLMs)—and integrating these technologies into business workflows.
“AI engineers develop models capable of making decisions, drawing inferences, or identifying patterns, and then evaluate and update these models,” Kantenga explained. Job postings frequently emphasize solving business challenges, improving operational efficiency, and automating repetitive tasks as key objectives of the position.
The timing of this growth comes amid ongoing challenges for young workers in the labor market. As of March 2026, the unemployment rate for Americans aged 20 to 24 stood at 6.4%, compared to the overall U.S. rate of 4.3%. Reports suggest that the rise of AI tools may be contributing to fewer positions for entry-level roles that involve structured or repetitive tasks. A Harvard Business School study observed a 13% decline in such jobs since ChatGPT’s launch in 2022.
Entry-level hiring also declined by 6% between December 2025 and February 2026 compared to the previous year, according to LinkedIn data. Kantenga noted that young workers who want to enter the workforce increasingly need proficiency in AI technologies to stand out and secure jobs, as companies require talent capable of scaling AI applications and identifying effective use cases.
Why it matters
The rapid expansion of AI engineer roles signals a significant shift in workforce demands, with AI competency becoming essential for new entrants into the labor market. This trend may influence education and training priorities while affecting employment prospects for youth, especially in industries impacted by automation.
Background
AI engineers design and implement artificial intelligence systems that drive automation and data-driven decision-making across sectors. The rise of AI tools like Large Language Models has accelerated interest in these roles, as companies seek to leverage AI to streamline operations and innovate. However, this shift also corresponds with concerns about AI replacing jobs traditionally held by less experienced workers.
