Shots Fired at White House Correspondents’ Dinner, One Officer Injured

Shots were fired Saturday night during the White House Correspondents’ Dinner at the Washington Hilton, prompting the evacuation of President Donald Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, and attendees. A 31-year-old suspect, identified as Cole Allen of Torrance, California, was apprehended and hospitalized, according to law enforcement sources.

Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche described the investigation as ongoing and stated that charges are expected to be filed shortly. President Trump disclosed that one Secret Service agent was struck by a bullet but was saved by a bulletproof vest. The suspect was armed with a shotgun and a handgun, sources familiar with the investigation said.

Trump said he was “very far away” when the shooting occurred and that the suspect never came close to breaching the ballroom doors. He released photos of the suspect and security footage showing the rapid response by law enforcement officials. “This was an event dedicated to freedom of speech that was supposed to bring together members of both parties with members of the press,” Trump said, noting the unity displayed amid the crisis.

The evacuation occurred shortly after 8:30 p.m. ET when gunfire was heard, causing attendees to duck under tables. Secret Service agents quickly removed the president and first lady from the stage. Trump recounted initially mistaking the sound for something innocuous before realizing it was gunfire.

According to law enforcement sources, the suspect told officers upon arrest that he intended to shoot Trump administration officials, although he did not specify targeting President Trump personally.

President Trump praised the Secret Service officer who was shot but described him as being in good spirits after the incident. He emphasized the inherent risks of public service, stating, “It’s a dangerous profession.”

The president said he pushed for the dinner to continue despite the shooting but was overruled by law enforcement. Plans to reschedule the event within 30 days were announced.

Why it matters

The shooting at a high-profile event attended by government officials, journalists, and political figures underscores ongoing concerns about security and political violence in the United States.
