Thermos Recalls 8.2 Million Containers Due to Injury Risk from Faulty Stoppers

Thermos has announced a recall of approximately 8.2 million food containers after defects in the stoppers caused dangerous ejections, leading to injuries and instances of permanent vision loss. The recall covers specific models sold between March 2008 and July 2024.

Scope of the Recall

The recall includes 5.8 million Thermos Stainless King Food Jars and about 2.3 million Thermos Sportsman Food & Beverage Bottles. These products were retailed through major outlets such as Target, Walmart, and Amazon.com, among others.

Specifically recalled are the Thermos Stainless King Food Jars with model numbers SK3000 and SK3020 manufactured before July 2023, as well as all Thermos Sportsman Food & Beverage Bottles with model number SK3010. These containers come in various colors and display the Thermos trademark on their sides, with model numbers printed on their bottoms.

Nature of the Defect and Reported Injuries

The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) reported that Thermos received 27 incident reports where stoppers were forcefully ejected from the containers upon opening. This defect is linked to the absence of a pressure relief feature in the stoppers, which allowed build-up force to expel them suddenly.

These forceful ejections have led to laceration injuries requiring medical treatment. Critically, three consumers reportedly suffered permanent vision loss as a result of the stopper-related injuries.

Consumer Response and Contact Information

Thermos urges owners of the recalled products to stop using them immediately to avoid further risk. Consumers are advised to contact Thermos for a free replacement stopper with the pressure relief feature or a replacement bottle, depending on the affected product model.

Consumers can reach Thermos through their support website at https://support.thermos.com or via https://www.thermos.com by selecting “Contact Us” or “Recall Info.” Assistance is also available by phone at 662-563-6822 from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. CT, Monday through Friday.

Why it matters

This recall highlights the safety risk posed by pressure build-up in sealed containers without adequate relief mechanisms. The serious injuries, including permanent vision damage, underline the importance of product design that considers pressure regulation to prevent hazardous ejections. The broad scope of the recall affects millions of consumers who may unknowingly face injury risk with these widely sold Thermos products.
