Three Killed in U.S. Strike on Suspected Drug Boat in Eastern Pacific

The U.S. military conducted a lethal strike Tuesday on a vessel in the eastern Pacific Ocean suspected of involvement in drug trafficking, resulting in three fatalities, the Pentagon said.

U.S. Southern Command, which oversees military operations in the region, reported that Gen. Francis L. Donovan authorized the “lethal kinetic strike” against the boat. The command alleged the vessel was operated by designated terrorist organizations engaged in narco-trafficking but did not present evidence to support these claims. The command released an unclassified video showing the boat before and during the explosion that destroyed it.

This strike follows another U.S. attack on a suspected drug boat in the Caribbean Sea just a day earlier, which killed two people. Since September, the Trump administration has intensified a campaign targeting suspected drug trafficking vessels in Latin American waters, with Pentagon data indicating at least 190 fatalities over this period.

Why it matters

The attacks form part of a broader U.S. strategy to combat what the administration calls “narcoterrorism” and to disrupt drug flows into the United States amid a domestic opioid overdose crisis. President Trump has framed these strikes as an escalation of a declared armed conflict with drug cartels in the Western Hemisphere.

However, the administration has not publicly presented concrete evidence that the targeted vessels carried drugs, nor has it addressed concerns about the legality of such strikes. Critics have questioned whether killing suspected drug traffickers in international waters complies with international law and rules of engagement.

Background

The campaign began as part of a significant U.S. military buildup in the region, coinciding with increased operations against drug networks. In January, U.S. forces carried out a raid that resulted in the capture of former Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, who now faces drug trafficking charges in the United States and has pleaded not guilty.

The Pentagon has emphasized that operations target vessels along known smuggling routes. Video footage released by U.S. Southern Command showed a small boat moving through the ocean before being struck in a missile or drone attack, resulting in its destruction by fire and explosions.

Despite the ongoing Iran war and other global military commitments, these strikes have intensified in recent weeks, underscoring the administration’s priority on combating narcotics trafficking in the Americas.
