Frontier Plane Fatally Strikes Pedestrian on Denver Runway

A Frontier Airlines plane departing Denver International Airport fatally struck a pedestrian on the runway on May 8, 2026, prompting an emergency evacuation and flight cancellation.

Audio recordings obtained from air traffic control reveal that shortly after being cleared for takeoff, the pilot reported, “We just hit somebody. We have an engine fire.” The pilot later described the individual as walking across the runway. Within about 40 seconds, the pilot indicated smoke inside the aircraft and initiated an evacuation on the runway.

Video from a passenger shows smoke filling the cabin and passengers using inflatable slides to exit the plane. Emergency crews transported passengers back to the terminal by bus, and the scheduled flight to Los Angeles was canceled. Frontier Airlines confirmed that the 224 passengers and seven crew members onboard suffered no major injuries, though 12 people reported minor injuries, with five taken to local hospitals.

Denver International Airport stated the pedestrian, who was not an airport employee and has not been identified, had jumped a perimeter fence and was struck approximately two minutes later while crossing the runway. The airport confirmed the pedestrian was killed and that the perimeter fence remained intact. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy referred to the individual as a “trespasser.”

The NTSB has been notified and an investigation by Frontier Airlines is underway. The affected runway reopened just before 11 a.m. local time following clearance by authorities.

Why it matters

Runway incursions involving pedestrians are rare but pose significant safety risks to both individuals and aircraft operations. The incident underscores the importance of airport perimeter security and rapid emergency response protocols. This fatality also highlights challenges airports face from unauthorized intrusions.

Background

Denver International Airport is one of the busiest airports in the United States, handling high volumes of passenger and cargo traffic. Strict perimeter fencing and surveillance systems are standard to prevent trespassing, but incidents occasionally occur. Federal and local agencies, including the National Transportation Safety Board, collaborate in investigating runway incidents to enhance aviation safety and prevent future tragedies.
