Labour MP Charlotte Nichols told the House of Commons that it took 1,088 days for her rape case to reach court after the attack, which occurred at an event she attended in her capacity as a Member of Parliament. She spoke out during a debate on the Government’s Courts and Tribunals Bill, opposing plans to restrict jury trials for crimes carrying sentences of up to three years.

MP Criticizes Government Plans to Limit Jury Trials

During the Commons debate, Nichols criticized Justice Secretary David Lammy for using the experiences of rape victims to justify reforms not directly related to them. She highlighted that although her rapist was acquitted in the criminal trial, a subsequent civil case found that she had been raped, resulting in a compensation order. Nichols abstained from voting on the bill, which only permits jury trials for the most serious offenses such as rape, murder, and manslaughter.

The government argues that the reforms will reduce backlog delays and speed up justice for victims. However, Nichols and others in the violence against women and girls sector expressed concerns that the bill’s framing pits survivors against defendants, potentially causing harm to victims’ interests.

Support and Government Response

Multiple MPs praised Nichols for publicly sharing her experience, describing her speech as a display of bravery. Courts Minister Sarah Sackman responded, noting the government’s commitment of over £500 million in funding for victim services, including new independent legal advisers specifically for rape victims.

Nichols also referenced Labour’s manifesto promise to introduce specialist rape courts, which have not yet been implemented, and cited research from the Institute for Government suggesting the proposed reforms might only save 2% of court time, potentially offering “false hope” rather than substantial improvements for rape victims.
