The operation involved the Russian-flagged tanker M/V TRUST, which is blacklisted by the U.S., EU, and UK.

The M/V TRUST, having loaded about 325,000 barrels of Russian crude at the Ust-Luga port, anchored in Omani territorial waters and switched off its Automatic Identification System (AIS) transponder during a prolonged stationary meeting with another vessel. This tactic, termed “semi-dark” by Windward, means one ship broadcasted its location while the other remained anonymous, complicating tracking efforts.
Based on an estimated price of around $90 per barrel on March 10, the transferred crude was valued at roughly $29.3 million. Windward noted the timing of the operation coincided with increased military tensions in the Gulf following Operation Epic Fury, suggesting the transfer exploited regional instability to evade scrutiny.
Context of Regional Instability and Sanctions Evasion
The oil transfer occurred amid volatile global energy markets and reduced shipping through the Strait of Hormuz due to ongoing U.S.-Israeli military actions against Iran. Oil prices surpassed $100 per barrel on March 9 as conflict threats affected supply routes, which account for about 20% of global oil shipments.
Russian President Vladimir Putin stated readiness on March 9 to resume energy cooperation with European customers if they choose to return. Meanwhile, U.S. Secretary of War Pete Hegseth emphasized that Russia “should not be involved” in the escalating U.S.-Israel-Iran conflict, responding to reports suggesting Russia might be providing intelligence support to Tehran.
