At least 13 injured after vehicle strikes crowd at Louisiana Lao New Year Festival

At least 13 people were injured on Saturday when a vehicle drove into a crowd at the Louisiana Lao New Year Festival, authorities reported. The driver, 57-year-old Todd Landry of Jeanerette, Louisiana, was arrested at the scene and charged with multiple offenses including first-degree negligent injuring and driving while impaired.

The incident occurred during the festival, which celebrates the Buddhist New Year. Deputies from the Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office stated they were investigating an event where a vehicle struck several pedestrians during a parade segment of the festival. State police confirmed the driver showed signs of impairment, with a breathalyzer test revealing a blood alcohol content of 0.137%.

Acadian Ambulance reported transporting 11 victims by ground and two by air. The Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office described some injuries as serious but indicated preliminary investigations found no evidence the act was intentional. Multiple charges were filed against the driver, including careless operation and possession of an open container.

In response, festival organizers canceled music programs for Saturday night but kept vendors open until 9 p.m. A statement from the festival expressed sorrow over the incident and noted all security personnel had been redirected to assist at the scene.

Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry offered prayers for those affected and praised the swift response of first responders on social media.
