Brian Hooker Details Night His Wife Lynette Disappeared in Bahamas

Brian Hooker provided detailed accounts of the night his wife, Lynette Hooker, went missing more than a week ago near Elbow Cay, Bahamas, amid an ongoing police investigation. Hooker, who was arrested on April 8 and released five days later, maintains that Lynette fell off their small boat and was swept out to sea.

In a recorded phone call to friends on April 7, while search and rescue efforts were still underway, Hooker recounted the timeline and circumstances of the incident. He explained that on April 4, he and Lynette anchored their sailboat, named “Soulmate,” in Aunt Pat’s Bay. From there, they used an 8-foot hard-bottom dinghy to visit Tahiti Beach, a popular shallow sandbar area at the southern tip of Elbow Cay known for a barge that serves drinks during the day.

The couple then traveled by dinghy to a nearby restaurant at the Abaco Inn near Hope Town. A representative from the Abaco Inn confirmed cooperation with local authorities but declined further comment.

Hooker shared maps and GPS screenshots created using the Navionics app, which depict the dinghy’s route that night. These maps show the incident occurred in shallow waters—less than 10 feet deep at high tide. According to CBS News meteorologist Andrew Kozak, weather conditions at Hope Town included sustained winds of 15 to 25 knots, with gusts over 40 mph and intermittent showers, creating challenging boating conditions. However, the shallow water would have reduced the impact compared to open sea conditions.

Following the alleged fall, the dinghy traveled about four miles to Marsh Harbour Boat Yards, where Hooker was found at 4 a.m. on April 5—approximately eight hours after he stated Lynette went missing.

Hooker’s attorney, Terrel Butler, has consistently asserted that Hooker denies wrongdoing, is deeply distressed by the incident, and has sought release from custody to aid in the search for his wife. The Bahamian Royal Police Force continues its investigation.

Why it matters

The case highlights the hazards of boating in challenging weather conditions near shallow sandbars, drawing attention to safety and search protocols in regions popular with recreational boaters. The investigation also underscores the complexities authorities face when a missing person case involves conflicting accounts and limited physical evidence.

Background

Elbow Cay and its surrounding areas, including Hope Town and Tahiti Beach, are tourist destinations within the Abaco Islands known for sailing and water-based activities. The region’s shallow sandbars and reefs can be dangerous with sudden weather changes, complicating navigation even for experienced boaters. The disappearance of Lynette Hooker has prompted extensive search efforts in a part of the Bahamas where water currents and weather can quickly shift.
