NPR Receives $113 Million in Donations Following Federal Funding Cuts

National Public Radio (NPR) announced it has received $113 million in charitable donations to bolster its operations following significant federal funding cuts. The largest gift, an $80 million donation, was made by philanthropist Connie Ballmer, wife of former Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer. An additional $33 million came from an anonymous donor.

Connie Ballmer’s contribution represents the largest single donation NPR has ever received from a living donor. The funds are intended to enhance NPR’s digital technology infrastructure and expand audience engagement across multiple platforms. Ballmer, a former member of the NPR Foundation board, emphasized the importance of independent journalism to democracy in a statement supporting the donation.

NPR CEO Katherine Maher highlighted the role these gifts will play in stabilizing the network’s finances. “These charitable donations will put the network and its stations on solid financial ground in the decades to come,” she said.

These donations arrive in the wake of considerable financial challenges for public media. In 2025, Congress cut $1.1 billion in funding for public broadcasting, a move that severely impacted roughly 246 NPR member stations and hundreds of PBS outlets. Although a federal judge ruled earlier in April 2026 that former President Donald Trump’s executive order halting funding for NPR and PBS violated the First Amendment, the ruling did not restore the funding.

Maher noted the lasting financial impact: “While the court’s decision was a critical victory for journalistic independence, it did not reverse the devastating reality of congressional defunding. The permanent loss of more than $1 billion in federal funding has created significant financial pressure across all of public media.”

Why it matters

The philanthropic support comes at a critical time when public broadcasters face unprecedented financial strain due to federal budget cuts. NPR’s ability to maintain and expand digital services is essential for reaching diverse audiences amid ongoing challenges. This infusion of funds also underscores the importance of private donations in sustaining independent journalism when government support is reduced.

Background

Federal funding for public broadcasting historically supported NPR and PBS stations nationwide, providing resources for news coverage, educational programming, and community engagement. The Trump administration attempted to eliminate this funding through an executive order in 2025, prompting legal challenges from public media organizations. The subsequent court ruling affirmed protections for journalistic independence but did not restore operational funds, intensifying the reliance on charitable contributions to maintain public media services.
