Pennsylvania Teacher Leon Smith Named 2026 National Teacher of the Year

Leon Smith, a social studies teacher at Haverford High School in Havertown, Pennsylvania, has been named the 2026 National Teacher of the Year by the Council of Chief State School Officers’ National Teacher of the Year program. Smith was previously recognized as Pennsylvania’s 2025 Teacher of the Year. The award highlights his dedication to teaching Advanced Placement U.S. history and African American studies.

Smith expressed that the recognition is a great honor, allowing him to represent teachers nationwide and acknowledge the contributions of educators who preceded him. In an interview, he emphasized the importance of not only teaching content but also making students feel seen and supported. He credited his own first-grade teacher for inspiring his understanding of how a teacher’s impact extends beyond academics.

Students and colleagues describe Smith as passionate, engaging, and caring. Haverford High School principal Pete Donaghy said, “He is everything you want in a teacher,” noting Smith’s ability to relate complex historical subjects to students. Former students highlighted how Smith made them feel valued, with one recalling how Smith’s attention gave them a sense of purpose.

In addition to his teaching, Smith has a longtime commitment to coaching basketball, leading the freshman team at Haverford. His passion for the sport began in childhood, inspired by the legendary player Julius Erving, also known as Dr. J. Erving personally congratulated Smith on “CBS Mornings,” connecting over their shared neighborhood and mutual respect for influential teachers and coaches.

Erving recalled the significant role his high school basketball coach and special education teacher, Mr. Ray Wilson, played throughout his life as a mentor available at any hour. Smith described meeting Erving as an unforgettable honor.
