Spotify has launched a new certification badge called “Verified by Spotify” to help users identify music created by human artists amid the growing influx of AI-generated songs on its platform.
The badge appears on the profiles of artists who have been vetted by Spotify and confirmed to be human. To qualify, an uploader’s profile must demonstrate “signals of a real artist,” such as a recognizable presence both on and off the platform, including concert dates, merchandise, and linked social media accounts. Profiles deemed to represent AI-generated or “AI-persona” artists are not eligible to receive the verified badge.
Spotify’s new initiative comes in response to criticism that allowing AI-generated music to proliferate on its service undermines human artists and devalues authentic content. The company emphasized the importance of transparency to help listeners trust the authenticity of the music they discover.
“In the AI era, it’s more important than ever to be able to trust the authenticity of the music you listen to,” Spotify stated, adding that the badge aims to provide “more context about artists and their music, so you can build more meaningful connections with them.”
Spotify will continue verifying artists on an ongoing basis and noted that not all authentic musicians may receive the badge immediately as the tool is rolled out. The absence of a badge does not necessarily mean an artist is AI-generated or ineligible for future verification.
Why it matters
As AI-generated content becomes increasingly difficult to distinguish from human-made art, Spotify’s badge offers a clear, user-friendly way for listeners to recognize authentic human artists. This transparency supports fair recognition and potential earnings for creators amid concerns about AI music’s impact on the industry.
Background
Artificial intelligence is rapidly advancing in creative fields, including music production, video, and digital art. Some AI-created personas, like the virtual actor Tilly Norwood, have sparked debate over the role of non-human creators in entertainment. Meanwhile, marketers also utilize AI to produce realistic models and advertisements.
Spotify’s move reflects a broader industry effort to adapt to the rising presence of AI-generated content and to protect the interests of human artists in the evolving digital music landscape.
