Substance sprayed at Tokyo luxury mall injures about 20 people

Approximately 20 people were injured on Monday after a man sprayed an unknown substance inside a luxury shopping mall in Tokyo’s Ginza district, local authorities reported.

What happened

According to Tokyo police, the incident occurred at an ATM on the ground floor of the Ginza 6 Shopping Center, a popular and upscale retail area. A man sprayed a substance, prompting immediate emergency response. Fire department officials confirmed that around 20 individuals experienced symptoms, primarily characterized as light injuries related to exposure, such as throat irritation and stinging sensations.

Emergency services quickly blocked off the street in front of the mall and deployed fire trucks, while some shoppers continued entering and exiting via side entrances. Firefighters wearing hazmat suits treated and examined affected individuals on site. Two people were seen being taken to an ambulance on stretchers, according to reports from the scene.

Witnesses described symptoms including throat burning and numbness shortly after the substance was released near the ATM. Police and fire officials have launched an investigation to determine the exact nature and cause of the substance sprayed.

Why it matters

While violent crime is generally rare in Japan, such incidents involving chemical substances raise significant public safety concerns due to their potential to cause mass harm. This case recalls Japan’s traumatic history with chemical attacks, most notably the 1995 sarin gas subway attack by the Aum Shinrikyo cult, which caused multiple fatalities and thousands of injuries.

The incident also highlights the challenges authorities face in quickly identifying and responding to chemical exposure events in crowded public spaces, and the ongoing need for vigilance to prevent or mitigate such attacks.

Background

Japan experiences relatively low rates of violent crime compared to many countries, supported by strict gun control laws and effective policing. However, isolated violent incidents periodically occur, including the 2022 assassination of former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and previous attacks involving knives and chemical agents.

Last December, a stabbing incident in a central Japan factory also involved the spraying of an unspecified liquid, injuring 14 people. These episodes underscore the persistent threat posed by unconventional attacks despite Japan’s low overall crime rate.
