Remains of Missing Los Alamos Lab Worker Found in New Mexico Forest

Melissa Casias, an administrative assistant at Los Alamos National Laboratory who disappeared nearly a year ago, was found dead last week in the Carson National Forest in New Mexico, authorities confirmed.

What happened

New Mexico State Police identified remains discovered by a hiker in the McGaffey Ridge area of the Carson National Forest as those of Casias. The discovery was made last week, and a handgun was found near the remains. Casias, 53, had been reported missing on June 26, 2025, after she failed to return home or show up for work following a visit to her daughter.

Her family found personal items, including her ID, purse, and cell phones, raising concerns about her welfare. Surveillance footage later showed Casias walking alone on a highway, wearing a backpack.

The medical examiner’s office is conducting further tests to determine the cause and manner of death. The investigation remains open as state police continue to pursue answers.

Casias was the second Los Alamos National Laboratory employee reported missing last year, following Anthony Chavez’s disappearance in May 2025. Both cases are part of a broader investigation involving at least 10 scientists and staff affiliated with sensitive nuclear and space technology facilities, currently led by the FBI.

Why it matters

The discovery of Casias’ remains brings partial closure to a nearly year-long missing person case involving a sensitive federal research facility. The cases of missing and deceased laboratory employees have prompted federal investigations due to the potential national security implications and unusual pattern of disappearances among staff with access to critical technology.

Authorities are focused on determining whether these cases are connected, which could influence ongoing security protocols and personnel safety measures at laboratories working on sensitive government projects.

Background

Los Alamos National Laboratory is a premier U.S. research center dealing with nuclear technology and other classified projects. In 2025, multiple employees, including Casias and Chavez, were reported missing under suspicious circumstances.

Family members and law enforcement have maintained search efforts since the disappearances, even as investigations explore potential links to sabotage, espionage, or other criminal activity. The FBI’s involvement underscores concerns about potential threats to national security stemming from these incidents.
