A Palestinian man holding Israeli citizenship carried out a shooting spree across several towns in central Israel on Sunday, resulting in one fatality and five wounded before being killed by police.
What happened
The attack began around 10:30 a.m. near a gas station close to Kokhav Yair, a town on the Israeli side of the West Bank boundary. The shooter fired at multiple locations including Tsur Natan, Tsur Yitzhak, and near the Israeli settlement of Sal’it in the West Bank.
Initially, authorities feared multiple attackers might be involved, recalling coordinated Hamas-style attacks from October 2023. However, police later confirmed the rampage was carried out by a lone gunman and an accomplice, who was arrested after attempting to stab police with a glass bottle during the arrest process.
Magen David Adom, Israel’s emergency medical service, reported one man, aged 35, was killed in Kokhav Yair. Five others were injured, with two in serious condition and three moderately wounded. Some victims sought shelter in nearby establishments, including a McDonald’s where paramedics treated one by cutting away bloodstained clothes.
The attacker reportedly remained inside his vehicle while shooting, which allowed quick movement across several towns.
Israeli security forces responded promptly, ultimately neutralizing the attacker and arresting his accomplice. Residents were instructed to stay indoors, and schools placed children on lockdown for several hours.
Why it matters
This shooting highlights evolving security challenges within Israel, notably the involvement of a Palestinian citizen as the attacker—a development raising concern given the recent history of external militant attacks. The incident occurred amid ongoing tensions following Hamas’s large-scale assault in October 2023 and Israel’s continuing military operations in Gaza.
Political leaders emphasized rapid security responses and reinforced the debate on counterterrorism measures. Public Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir praised the police’s swift action and reiterated support for stringent measures against terrorists, underscoring security as a critical issue ahead of Israel’s upcoming legislative elections.
Background
Since Hamas’s deadly October 7, 2023, attack that killed approximately 1,200 Israelis and took hostages, Israel has maintained heightened security alert, especially in towns near the West Bank. The consequent Israeli military offensive in Gaza has resulted in significant casualties including over 72,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza health authorities.
Tensions remain high between Israeli security forces and Palestinian communities in both Israel and occupied territories, with frequent clashes and incidents further destabilizing the region. The recent shooting by a Palestinian Israeli citizen marks a notable shift from previous patterns of violence, typically linked to militants crossing from Gaza or the West Bank.
On the same day as the shootings, at least four Palestinians were killed in an Israeli airstrike in Khan Younis, Gaza Strip, reflecting ongoing hostilities in the broader conflict.
