Rory McIlroy Wins Second Consecutive Masters Tournament

Rory McIlroy claimed his second straight Masters title on April 12, 2026, pulling ahead with key birdies around Amen Corner to finish at 12-under 276 and secure a one-shot victory over Scottie Scheffler. The win at Augusta National Golf Club establishes McIlroy as the fourth player in Masters history to win consecutive tournaments.

McIlroy seized control during the final round by landing a bold shot over Rae’s Creek to within seven feet for a birdie on the par-3 12th hole. He followed with a powerful 350-yard drive on the par-5 13th, setting up another birdie and extending his lead to three shots.

Despite a few challenges late in the round, including a difficult chip shot for par on the 16th hole and a wayward drive that resulted in a bogey on the 18th, McIlroy maintained his composure to close with a 1-under 71. He ultimately finished one stroke ahead of world No. 1 Scheffler, who completed the day bogey-free with a 71 and recorded the first bogey-free weekend at the Masters since 1942.

Scottie Scheffler’s strong weekend performance featured rounds of 65 and 68 as he attempted to mount the largest 36-hole comeback in Masters history, entering the third round 12 shots behind the leaders. Despite his effort, Scheffler fell short of overtaking McIlroy, marking his third runner-up finish in major championships.

Justin Rose, who led by two shots earlier in the round, saw his advantage slip away with bogeys at the 11th and 12th holes and a three-putt par at the 12th. The 45-year-old Rose missed his chance to become the second-oldest Masters champion, settling for a third close finish at the tournament.

Speaking after the victory, McIlroy acknowledged the competitive field but credited his play and timing for the win. With this second Masters green jacket, McIlroy joined Tiger Woods, Nick Faldo, and Jack Nicklaus as the only golfers to win consecutive Masters tournaments.

Why it matters

McIlroy’s back-to-back Masters victories place him in an elite group with some of the greatest players in golf history. His win also adds momentum toward the rare feat of winning three consecutive Masters, which no golfer has accomplished. Additionally, his performance cements McIlroy’s status as one of the sport’s leading figures after becoming the sixth player to achieve the career Grand Slam last year.

Background

Before 2025, McIlroy had long chased a Masters title without success, finally breaking through with a playoff win over Justin Rose that completed his career Grand Slam. The 2026 Masters victory marks his continued mastery of Augusta National, a course renowned for its challenge and prestige. Rose’s persistence at Augusta also remains notable, as he approaches the age record for Masters champions held by Jack Nicklaus.
