The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has appointed Dr. Jonathan M. Green as the new chief executive officer of the NIH Clinical Center, the world’s largest hospital dedicated exclusively to clinical research. Dr. Green is scheduled to assume the role on May 17, 2026.
As CEO, Dr. Green will manage the Clinical Center’s daily operations, including its nearly $700 million annual budget and its 200-bed research hospital located on the NIH campus in Bethesda, Maryland. The facility spans 870,000 square feet and serves thousands of patients who participate exclusively in research protocols. In 2025, the Clinical Center recorded over 3,000 inpatient admissions and approximately 72,000 outpatient visits.
Expansion and Modernization
The Clinical Center is currently undergoing a major expansion to modernize its facilities, adding more than 570,000 square feet to support advanced patient care alongside cutting-edge biomedical research. This project is expected to be completed by 2029.
Leadership and Experience
Dr. Green joined NIH in 2018 as the director of the Office of Human Subjects Research Protections, where he led the consolidation of NIH’s multiple Institutional Review Boards (IRBs) into a single centralized IRB. IRBs ensure that all research involving human participants meets ethical and regulatory standards.
Before joining NIH, Dr. Green was a professor of medicine, pathology, and immunology and held leadership roles at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, including Associate Dean for Human Studies and Executive Chair of the IRB. His research focused on molecular mechanisms of T cell activation.
Dr. Green earned his medical degree from Wayne State University and completed residency training in internal medicine at Boston City Hospital. He pursued a fellowship in pulmonary and critical care medicine at the University of Michigan Medical Center and additional postdoctoral training at the University of Chicago. He is board certified in internal medicine, pulmonary diseases, and critical care medicine.
In addition to his new executive role, Dr. Green continues as an attending physician in the Medical Intensive Care Unit and Pulmonary Consult Service at the Clinical Center. He also serves on the Board of Directors for the Association for the Accreditation of Human Research Protection Programs.
NIH Director Dr. Jay Bhattacharya praised Dr. Green’s leadership and experience, emphasizing his capacity to guide the Clinical Center as a leading institution for innovative clinical trials and biomedical discovery.
Why it matters
The appointment of Dr. Green comes at a critical time as the NIH Clinical Center expands its research and patient care capabilities. His leadership in human research protection and clinical expertise positions the center to maintain its role as a global leader in medical research that directly impacts patient health outcomes.
