Russia Launches Intense Aerial Attacks on Kyiv, Killing 12

Russian forces launched a “massive and virtually nonstop” aerial assault on Kyiv and several other Ukrainian cities over the last two nights, Ukrainian officials reported, resulting in at least 12 deaths and the destruction of residential buildings in the capital.

According to Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko, the attacks included more than 1,500 drones and over 50 missiles. Among those killed was a 15-year-old girl, and 57 people were injured, 27 of whom remain hospitalized. The missile strikes also damaged a school and a veterinary clinic, with search and rescue operations ongoing.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described the bombing as a deliberate terrorist tactic designed to overwhelm Ukraine’s air defenses by coordinating the scale and timing of the strikes. He stated that approximately 94% of incoming drones were intercepted, but only 73% of missiles were successfully shot down, highlighting gaps in air defense capabilities.

The attacks affected other cities as well, including Odesa, Rivne, Ivano-Frankivsk, and Kharkiv. Zelenskyy suggested that the timing of the bombardment was not coincidental, as it coincided with U.S. President Donald Trump’s visit to China, aiming to disrupt international political dynamics and draw negative attention amid critical diplomatic engagements.

In response to questions following Russia’s Victory Day parade, President Vladimir Putin indicated that the war might be nearing an end after more than four years. President Trump also expressed optimism about an upcoming resolution. However, Zelenskyy countered these remarks, emphasizing that Russia had ended a short ceasefire and that only Russia could initiate a genuine, lasting peace.

During a recent summit in Bucharest, Zelenskyy met with leaders from Finland, Romania, Latvia, Poland, and Lithuania to discuss avenues toward ending the conflict.

Why it matters

The intensified Russian strikes on Kyiv and other cities signal a dramatic escalation in hostilities during a sensitive geopolitical moment involving U.S.-China relations, potentially aiming to influence international diplomacy. The attacks also expose vulnerabilities in Ukraine’s air defense systems, indicating a need for enhanced military support and strategic adjustments amid an ongoing conflict that has lasted more than four years.

Background

The Russia-Ukraine war, which began in 2022, has involved repeated missile and drone attacks targeting Ukrainian infrastructure and population centers. Previous pauses in fighting, such as during Russia’s Victory Day celebrations, have often ended with renewed hostilities. International efforts, including U.S. support for Ukraine’s defense and diplomatic summits with European leaders, continue to seek pathways to conflict resolution.
