Albino Buffalo “Donald Trump” Saved from Eid Sacrifice in Bangladesh

An albino buffalo in Bangladesh, nicknamed “Donald Trump” for its striking golden tuft of hair resembling the former U.S. president’s hairstyle, has been spared from sacrifice during the Eid al-Adha festival following a government intervention.

What happened

The approximately 1,500-pound albino buffalo was originally purchased for traditional sacrifice as part of the Eid al-Adha celebrations, a religious festival observed by Muslims worldwide that often involves animal sacrifices. However, the animal’s unique hairdo sparked widespread attention online, turning it into an internet sensation.

Due to the “unusual level of public interest” and “security concerns,” Bangladesh’s Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed ordered the animal to be exempted from the sacrifice. The buyer who had purchased the buffalo was refunded, and the animal was relocated to Bangladesh’s National Zoo in Dhaka, where it will remain on public display alongside over 2,000 other animals across 191 species.

The buffalo resides on a farm in Narayanganj, near the capital city of Dhaka. Its owner, Ziauddin Mridha, described the animal as gentle and noted it requires attentive care, including frequent feeding and regular baths.

Why it matters

The decision to spare the albino buffalo underscores how viral social media attention can influence traditional cultural practices and government actions. It also reflects growing sensitivity around animal welfare during religious festivals involving animal sacrifice.

The government’s intervention to protect the buffalo shows the balancing act between upholding cultural customs and responding to public sentiment, especially when an animal garners significant emotional support and media coverage.

Background

Eid al-Adha is an important Islamic festival commemorated each year by Muslims through prayers and animal sacrifices. These sacrifices symbolize the willingness of Ibrahim (Abraham) to sacrifice his son as an act of obedience to God, with the meat typically distributed among family, friends, and the needy.

The albino buffalo’s viral fame is not unprecedented in the region; a decade earlier, a golden pheasant in a Chinese zoo similarly attracted attention due to a likeness to Donald Trump’s hairstyle, drawing visitors and media focus.
