Study Predicts Widening Resource Access Gaps by 2050 Across Regions and Income Groups

A recent study co-authored by researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) predicts large disparities in access to food, water, and energy by 2050, with significant variation across different regions and income groups. Published in the journal Earth’s Future, the research highlights how lower-income populations in some areas could face severe resource insecurity, potentially spending up to half their income on food, while wealthier groups might only spend about 5 percent.

These represent significant increases from 2015 baselines, where food burdens for the lowest-income groups were around 20–25 percent.

For example, in parts of the Middle East, the lowest-income group could allocate nearly 19 percent of income to residential energy costs by 2050, while the wealthiest spend under 2 percent. In Eastern Europe, energy costs for the bottom income quintile could reach 11.3 percent, versus less than 5 percent for the richest groups.
