Omaha Police Kill Woman After Child Kidnapping and Assault at Walmart

Omaha police fatally shot a woman Tuesday after she allegedly kidnapped a young boy and slashed him with a knife outside a Walmart store, authorities said. The child, estimated to be 2 or 3 years old, suffered a large laceration to his face and injury to a hand but is expected to survive.

Deputy Chief Scott Gray reported that the suspect initiated the incident by approaching the child and a female caregiver inside the Walmart. She brandished a large knife reportedly stolen from the store and took possession of the child, effectively kidnapping him. The suspect instructed the woman to walk ahead of a shopping cart holding the child at knifepoint.

The group exited the store and moved down a driveway, where a verbal confrontation occurred between the two women for several minutes until police arrived. Officers responding to a 911 call issued commands to the suspect outside the store. Body camera footage released by police shows the woman raising the knife over the child seated in the cart as an officer aims a gun at her.

At that point, the suspect began slashing the child’s face, leading at least one officer to fire their weapon, killing the woman at the scene.

Gray stated that the two women did not know each other and that the relationship between the child and his caregiver remains unclear. The motive for the woman’s actions has not been determined. Police are reviewing store video as part of their investigation.

The Walmart was mostly empty during the incident, and the suspect’s actions inside the store did not attract attention from other shoppers, Gray noted.

The Omaha Police Department is investigating the shooting with assistance from the Nebraska State Patrol and the Sarpy County Sheriff’s Office.

Why it matters

This incident highlights the dangers law enforcement faces when responding to armed threats involving vulnerable victims such as young children. The shooting is under official review, underscoring the importance of transparency and accountability in police use-of-force cases.

Background

Police shootings during active kidnapping and assault situations are rare but critical incidents that prompt multi-agency investigations. Omaha police routinely collaborate with state and county authorities for oversight and evidence collection in cases involving lethal force.
