Ford recalls nearly 1.4 million F-150 pickups over gearshift defect

Ford Motor Company has announced a recall of nearly 1.4 million F-150 pickup trucks after discovering a gearshift defect that could increase the risk of a vehicle crash. The recall affects F-150 models equipped with six-speed automatic transmissions produced between March 12, 2014, and August 18, 2017, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

The defect involves a potential loss of signal between the transmission range sensor and the powertrain control module. This fault can cause the transmission to unexpectedly downshift into second gear while driving, potentially leading to loss of vehicle control. NHTSA stated that some affected vehicles may display a malfunction indicator light or a wrench light on the dashboard as a warning sign of the transmission issue.

Ford is aware of one reported accident and two injuries that may be linked to this gearshift problem. Though the recall is voluntary, the company plans to notify owners starting April 27. Vehicle owners can take their trucks to authorized Ford or Lincoln dealerships, where technicians will update or replace the affected components at no cost.

Why it matters

This recall is significant because of the large number of trucks involved and the safety risk posed by unexpected downshifting while driving. Sudden gear changes can cause the driver to lose control of the vehicle, increasing the likelihood of accidents, particularly on busy roads or at higher speeds. The affected trucks span multiple model years, representing a broad segment of the F-150 customer base.

Background

Ford’s F-150 is one of the best-selling pickup trucks in the United States, known for its durability and performance. However, recalls related to transmission and gearshift problems have occasionally affected various models across the auto industry. The transmission range sensor detects the gear shift and communicates this to the vehicle’s powertrain system to manage engine and transmission coordination. A failure in this signal can disrupt normal operation, as seen in this recall.

Owners seeking further information on their vehicle’s status or recall procedure can contact Ford customer service or check the NHTSA website using their vehicle identification number (VIN).
