Remains in Oregon River Identified as Family Missing Since 1958

Authorities have identified remains recovered from a car submerged in Oregon’s Columbia River as those of the Martin family, who mysteriously vanished in 1958 during a trip to find Christmas greenery. The Hood River County Sheriff’s Office confirmed Thursday that DNA analysis positively matched the remains to parents Kenneth and Barbara Martin and their daughter Barbie.

The family’s Ford station wagon was located in 2024 by diver Archer Mayo, who had spent years searching for the vehicle. Investigators managed to recover only the car’s frame and attached components due to heavy sediment encasing it. Further searches in 2025 retrieved human remains that were sent to the Oregon state medical examiner for analysis.

Othram Inc., a forensic DNA laboratory based in Texas, conducted advanced DNA extraction and profiling on the skeletal remains. While Kenneth Martin’s remains were conclusively identified through comparison with living relatives, the condition of the other remains prevented further DNA testing. The sheriff’s office closed the investigation after finding no evidence of foul play.

The Martin family disappeared in December 1958, sparking a nationwide search and unusual media attention at the time. Two of their children’s bodies were recovered months after the disappearance, but the parents and daughter remained missing. Authorities had even offered a reward for information, amid public speculation about potential foul play.

Mayo, the diver who discovered the vehicle, expressed relief that the decades-old case was resolved. “It’s not going to get more resolved than it is now, and so that feels good,” he said.

Why it matters

This identification closes a cold case that has lasted nearly seven decades, providing long-sought answers for the Martin family’s descendants and the community. It also demonstrates the growing capability of modern forensic DNA technology to solve historical disappearances and mysteries involving degraded remains.

Background

The Martin family’s 1958 disappearance during a routine trip to collect Christmas greenery became one of Oregon’s most enduring mysteries. Despite early discoveries of some family members’ remains, the parents and one daughter were never found—until the recent underwater discovery of their vehicle in the Columbia River. Advances in DNA analysis and persistent search efforts ultimately confirmed the identities, bringing an end to years of uncertainty.
