Gunman kills six in Kyiv before police shoot him dead

A gunman opened fire in Kyiv’s Holosiivskyi district on Saturday, killing six people before barricading himself inside a supermarket and taking hostages, Ukrainian officials said. After about 40 minutes of negotiations failed to secure a peaceful surrender, special tactical police units stormed the store and shot the attacker dead.

Ihor Klymenko, head of Ukraine’s Interior Ministry, said the assailant first shot four bystanders on the street, then entered the supermarket and killed a fifth person. A sixth victim, a young woman, later died from her injuries in hospital, Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed.

The gunman was armed with a legally registered carbine assault rifle. Klymenko stated the man, born in 1968, had applied to renew his weapon permit last December and had provided a medical certificate during the process. Authorities have launched an investigation to verify the origin of the medical certificate.

Before the police stormed the supermarket, a female negotiator used a loudspeaker to appeal to the assailant to release the hostages and engage in dialogue, emphasizing concern for possible wounded individuals inside. Negotiations ultimately failed, prompting police to neutralize the attacker as he resisted arrest.

Emergency responders covered the bodies of the victims on the street before they were removed. Footage from the scene showed police taking cover in the shopping mall adjacent to the supermarket, with bystanders evacuated for safety.

Why it matters

The shooting adds to the security challenges faced by Kyiv during ongoing conflict conditions in Ukraine. It underscores concerns about firearms licensing and monitoring amid heightened tensions with Russia. The incident occurred the same day as multiple military strikes were reported across Ukraine and Russian territory, highlighting a volatile security environment.

Background

The attack comes amid an ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine, marked by frequent hostilities including drone strikes, missile attacks, and counterstrikes on both sides. On the same day, Russian forces launched strikes targeting civilian areas in Ukraine, killing at least one person in Donetsk and wounding dozens. Ukrainian forces responded with drone attacks on Russian industrial facilities.

Ukraine’s Interior Ministry did not disclose further information about the gunman’s identity or motives. Investigations continue to determine the full circumstances surrounding the attack and the verification of the assailant’s weapon license documentation.
