The Security Cabinet of Mexico reported that among the injured were six American citizens, including a 29-year-old man and a 61-year-old woman. Authorities said that seven individuals sustained gunshot wounds while at least two others suffered injuries from falls during the chaos. As of Monday night, eight people remained hospitalized.
Videos verified by CBS News showed a man armed with a handgun pacing at the top of the Pyramid of the Moon moments before gunshots were heard. Visitors at the base of the pyramid can be seen fleeing in some footage.
Officials announced that a firearm, a bladed weapon, and ammunition were recovered from the scene. The circumstances leading up to the shooting have not been disclosed, and no additional suspects were reported.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum expressed sorrow over the incident, stating, “What happened today in Teotihuacán deeply pains us.” She extended condolences to the victims and their families and confirmed ongoing communication with the Canadian embassy regarding the situation.
