NASA’s Curiosity Rover Dislodges Stuck Rock After Drilling on Mars

NASA’s Curiosity rover successfully dislodged a rock that had become stuck on its drill bit after collecting a sample on Mars. The incident began on April 25, 2026, when the rover drilled into the rock, nicknamed “Atacama,” but the rock remained attached to the drill afterward.

For several days, mission engineers worked to free the rock by repositioning Curiosity’s robotic arm and activating drill vibrations. These efforts culminated on May 1, when the rock finally detached from the drill but broke into multiple pieces.

Curiosity’s Mast Camera (Mastcam) captured a close-up image of Atacama on May 6. The rock measures approximately 1.5 feet in diameter at its base and is about 6 inches thick. It is estimated to weigh around 28.6 pounds on Earth, which translates to about one-third of that weight on Mars due to lower gravity. A circular drill hole is clearly visible in the rock.

Why it matters

This event showcased the challenges of operating drilling equipment in the Martian environment, where mechanical obstacles can arise unexpectedly. Freeing the stuck rock was essential to maintain Curiosity’s drilling capabilities for future sample collection. The incident provided mission engineers valuable data on how the rover’s tools interact with the Martian surface and informed troubleshooting procedures to address similar issues.

Background

Curiosity has been exploring Mars since 2012, conducting geological studies to understand the planet’s past habitability. Its drill is a key instrument that allows it to collect rock powder samples from beneath the surface, which are then analyzed to reveal the planet’s mineralogy and chemical composition. The rover’s Mastcam supports these investigations by documenting the terrain and sampling sites with high-resolution images.
