Trump-Backed Challenger Defeats Rep. Thomas Massie in Kentucky GOP Primary

Rep. Thomas Massie lost the Republican primary for Kentucky’s 4th Congressional District to Trump-backed challenger Ed Gallrein, CBS News projected Tuesday. The defeat marks the latest GOP incumbent to be unseated after President Donald Trump endorsed a challenger in a primary race.

Massie, a seven-term congressman known for his maverick positions, conceded the race and criticized the influence of outside spending, including from pro-Israel groups. He highlighted key policy disagreements with Trump, such as on aid to Israel, the Iran conflict, and the release of Justice Department files related to Jeffrey Epstein.

In his concession speech, Massie quipped that the campaign “went on longer than Vietnam,” maintaining that he resisted attempts by Washington interests trying to sway his vote. Despite his efforts, Massie acknowledged that Trump’s endorsement of Gallrein and heavy spending from groups like AIPAC and the Republican Jewish Coalition significantly impacted the race.

President Trump labeled Massie a “bad guy” and said he deserved to lose. Trump allies celebrated Gallrein’s win, emphasizing voter desire for representatives aligned with Trump’s agenda. Gallrein, a former Navy SEAL, cited Massie’s opposition to Trump-backed legislation and his friction with party leadership as reasons for the loss. He said Massie “burned every bridge” in Washington and was favored by Democrats.

The Kentucky GOP primary set a record as the most expensive House primary ever, with millions of dollars from pro-Israel interest groups fueling the campaign to unseat Massie, whose independence and dissent on key votes had frustrated Trump and his allies.

Trump criticized Massie for opposing his signature tax-cut bill, the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act.” Massie had also opposed military actions in Iran and other controversial operations, which further alienated him from the Trump faction within the GOP.

The primary also drew attention due to visits from prominent figures like Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, who campaigned alongside Gallrein, emphasizing loyalty to Trump as essential for GOP unity in Congress. However, House Speaker Mike Johnson chose not to endorse Massie, though he acknowledged the importance of having reliable GOP votes in a narrowly divided House.

Why it matters

Massie’s loss highlights the ongoing influence of Trump’s endorsements in shaping the GOP’s Congressional makeup, particularly by targeting incumbents seen as insufficiently loyal to the former president’s agenda. This primary outcome reflects deepening divisions within the Republican Party ahead of the 2026 midterm elections and underscores the role of outside political spending in increasingly expensive congressional primaries.

Background

Thomas Massie has served Kentucky’s 4th District since winning a special election in 2012. Known for his libertarian-leaning independence, Massie frequently broke ranks with party leadership, including on fiscal policy and foreign affairs. His defeat follows a pattern where Trump-backed challengers have successfully unseated incumbent Republicans who oppose or criticize the former president.
