Texas Democrat Draws Criticism for Targeting American Zionists in Campaign

Texas Democratic congressional candidate Maureen Galindo is under intense criticism from both parties after social media posts in which she vowed to transform an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention center into a prison specifically for American Zionists. The controversial remarks have led to accusations of antisemitism and raised questions about potential Republican backing of her campaign.

Galindo’s Controversial Statements

Galindo, who is competing in the Democratic primary runoff for Texas’ 35th Congressional District, posted on Instagram last week that she would “turn Karnes ICE Detention Center into a prison for American Zionists and former ICE officers for human trafficking.” She further described the facility as a “castration processing center for pedophiles which will probably be most of the Zionists.” In the same post, Galindo stated she would introduce legislation declaring all Zionism and support of Zionism as antisemitic.

Her social media also includes references to “billionaire Zionists” and calls for “Zionist associated candidates and politicians” to face “treason trials.” In response to the antisemitism allegations, Galindo asserted she opposes “Zionist Jews” rather than Jewish people broadly.

Political Backlash and Accusations of GOP Interference

Galindo’s remarks have drawn sharp condemnation from prominent Democrats. Her primary opponent, Johnny Garcia, described her rhetoric as “conspiracy theories and hateful rhetoric.” Gubernatorial candidate James Talarico declined to campaign with her, telling the Jewish Telegraphic Agency that her comments were unacceptable. Republican candidate Carlos De La Cruz also condemned the statements as “disgusting.”

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee Chair Suzan DelBene characterized Galindo’s comments as “extremely dangerous” and “vile,” demanding House Republican leadership stop supporting her candidacy. They highlighted that a newly formed political action committee, Lead Left PAC, has spent over $800,000 backing Galindo while opposing Garcia. Though Lead Left describes itself as anti-Trump, reports have linked its digital tools to Republican fundraising networks, raising suspicions about GOP efforts to influence the Democratic primary.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez called Galindo’s comments “bigoted garbage and antisemitism,” demanding transparency about the Republican donors allegedly supporting her. House Speaker Mike Johnson denied knowledge of backing for Galindo and used the controversy to criticize the Democratic Party’s direction.

Primary Race and District Changes

Galindo and Garcia advanced to the Democratic runoff after no candidate received a majority in the initial primary. The 35th District, which includes parts of San Antonio and surrounding areas, was redrawn last year to favor Republicans, as current Democratic Rep. Greg Casar runs in a different district.

The Republican runoff for the same seat includes Carlos De La Cruz, endorsed by former President Trump and Speaker Johnson, and state Rep. John Lujan. The race is seen as a key battleground in a district recently reshaped to increase GOP competitiveness.

Why it matters

Galindo’s comments and the ensuing controversy highlight challenges faced by political parties in managing fringe rhetoric within their ranks. The situation also exemplifies how opposing parties may intervene in primaries to promote candidates perceived as easier to defeat. The conflict raises broader concerns about the rise of antisemitic rhetoric in political discourse and its impact on electoral dynamics in competitive districts.
