A fire erupted early Wednesday at Kosher Kingdom, a Jewish supermarket in London’s Golders Green neighborhood, but police have confirmed the incident is not suspicious, easing concerns in a community recently targeted by attacks.
What happened
The London Fire Brigade responded to numerous calls reporting a blaze at Kosher Kingdom, mobilizing 15 fire engines and around 100 firefighters to the scene. Flames and thick black smoke were visible from the store, which includes both a ground-floor shop and a rear storage area. Firefighters worked to extinguish the fire while police assisted with road closures and evacuations.
Assistant Commissioner Craig Carter of the London Fire Brigade told reporters that the fire’s circumstances were not believed to be suspicious at this time, with preliminary reports suggesting an electrical fault may have caused the blaze. The Metropolitan Police later confirmed via social media that there was no indication the fire was targeted or deliberate, and fortunately, no injuries were reported.
Why it matters
Golders Green is home to a large Jewish community that has been subject to several recent antisemitic attacks, including synagogues and community sites targeted in arson incidents over the past months. The area also experienced a stabbing attack in late April that increased the UK’s national threat level from “substantial” to “severe.”
The confirmation that this fire was non-suspicious helps alleviate fears of another targeted attack in a community already on high alert. In response to ongoing threats, the Metropolitan Police established a specialized “community protection team” combining neighborhood policing with counterterrorism units to safeguard the Jewish population in London.
Background
Golders Green has seen a rise in antisemitic violence in recent months, including multiple arson attacks and a stabbing incident in April that prompted heightened security measures. Some attacks have been claimed by Harakat Ashab al-Yamin al-Islamiya (HAYI), a group linked to Iran. The UK government and London police have responded with enhanced protective efforts to support the Jewish community and combat hate crimes in the area.
