NASA to Host Webinar on Using Satellite Data Explorer for Commercial Earth Observation Data

NASA will host a webinar on Wednesday, June 17, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. EDT to demonstrate how to use its Satellite Data Explorer (SDX) platform to discover, access, and task commercial Earth observation data.

What happened

The webinar, part of NASA’s Commercial Satellite Data Acquisition (CSDA) program, aims to train users in utilizing the SDX, a web-based platform that facilitates searching, accessing, and tasking commercial satellite imagery and data. Approved users can use the tool to streamline their data workflows by leveraging features such as searching by area-of-interest, product type, and vendor. The platform also allows users to visualize query results with interactive maps and browse quick-look images.

In addition to data discovery and access, the event will introduce participants to the Data Acquisition Request System. This system enables users to submit and monitor tasking requests for future commercial satellite data acquisitions.

Why it matters

Access to commercial Earth observation data through NASA’s CSDA program provides researchers, policymakers, and other stakeholders with valuable satellite imagery that can support environmental monitoring, disaster response, climate research, and other space-related applications. The webinar equips users with the tools to efficiently navigate and utilize these datasets, enhancing the utility of commercial satellite data for scientific and operational use.

Background

NASA’s CSDA program was established to foster partnerships with commercial satellite data providers, expanding the availability of high-quality Earth observation data to the public sector. The Satellite Data Explorer platform is a key component of the program, designed to offer centralized data discovery, access, and tasking capabilities. This webinar represents an ongoing effort to increase awareness and adoption of commercial satellite data resources within the scientific and wider community.
