Botswana Joins NASA’s Artemis Accords as 68th Signatory

NASA has welcomed Botswana as the 68th signatory to the Artemis Accords, formalizing the southern African nation’s commitment to peaceful, transparent, and responsible space exploration. Botswana is the sixth African country to join the growing coalition of nations backing NASA’s international principles for lunar and deep space activities.

What Happened

The Republic of Botswana signed the Artemis Accords during a ceremony at NASA headquarters in Washington, D.C., on Thursday. Botswana’s Minister of Communications and Innovation, David Tshere, signed the agreement on behalf of the country. The event also included U.S. Department of State Senior Advisor for Space Gregory Autry and Mabedi Ngwenya, Botswana’s acting ambassador to the United States.

The Artemis Accords, launched in 2020 by NASA alongside seven founding countries, establish guidelines for the safe, peaceful, and cooperative exploration of the Moon, Mars, and beyond. Botswana’s accession coincides with a significant phase of NASA’s Artemis program, which recently announced the crew for its Artemis III lunar mission currently in spacecraft assembly.

Key Facts

Botswana’s relationship with space initiatives dates back to the early 1970s when it participated in the U.S.-led satellite program later named Landsat, helping pioneer satellite Earth observation. Most recently, Botswana marked a milestone by launching its first Earth observation satellite, Botswana Satellite 1, in March 2025 aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket.

By signing the Artemis Accords, Botswana agrees to explore space peacefully and transparently, support emergency aid for astronauts in distress, share scientific data openly, avoid interference with other nations’ activities, and protect historic space sites and artifacts through best practices.

What This Means

Botswana’s formal entry into the Artemis Accords highlights Africa’s expanding role in global space exploration and international cooperation. This step not only strengthens Botswana’s existing space partnerships but also signals the country’s intent to be an active participant in shaping the future of space activities governed by mutually agreed standards.

For ordinary citizens and the global community, Botswana’s participation ensures that space exploration efforts remain responsible, transparent, and geared toward peaceful use, thereby fostering trust and collaboration among countries. Furthermore, as NASA’s Artemis program aims to return humans to the Moon and prepare for Mars exploration, incorporating diverse nations like Botswana broadens the reach and resource pool available for these complex missions, potentially accelerating scientific breakthroughs and economic opportunities tied to space technologies.

Background

The Artemis Accords were initiated in 2020 during the Trump administration to address the need for clear, cooperative principles for lunar exploration amid rising interest from governments and private companies. Botswana’s history with satellite Earth observation, beginning with Landsat and continuing through its successful satellite launch in 2025, laid the groundwork for its commitment to these accords.

What Comes Next

NASA anticipates that additional countries will join the Artemis Accords in the coming months and years as international space activities grow. Meanwhile, Botswana is expected to continue developing its civil space capabilities and international collaborations under the framework provided by the Accords.
