Trump aide Sebastian Gorka signals interest in National Counterterrorism Center…

Sebastian Gorka, a national security aide to President Donald Trump, has expressed interest in taking over as director of the National Counterterrorism Center (NCTC), according to two U.S. officials familiar with the matter.

The NCTC is a central agency coordinating the United States’ counterterrorism efforts. Gorka’s potential appointment comes amid a period of leadership transition and changing priorities within the national security framework under the Trump administration.

Leadership changes at the National Counterterrorism Center

Currently, Joe Weirsky, a Marine veteran with special operations experience, is the acting director of the NCTC. He assumed the role following the resignation of Joe Kent, an Army Special Forces veteran. Kent stepped down last month after publicly criticizing the Trump administration’s decision to initiate military action against Iran, citing concerns about the war’s justification and potential human costs.

Kent, nominated by Trump and confirmed by the Senate last year, issued a statement contradicting the administration’s rationale, stating that Iran did not pose an imminent threat and attributing the conflict’s origins to external political influences. He is now under FBI investigation over allegations of leaking classified information. Gorka has strongly condemned Kent, calling him an “utter disgrace.”

Gorka’s background and political stance

Gorka previously served as a national security strategist during Trump’s first term before departing after John Kelly became White House chief of staff. Born in the United Kingdom to Hungarian parents, Gorka is a naturalized U.S. citizen. He has held academic positions at Marine Corps University and the National Defense University.

Known for his hardline stance against Islamist extremism and restrictive views on immigration, Gorka frequently appears on conservative media, where he supports Trump and criticizes administration critics. If nominated, Gorka would require Senate confirmation to assume the directorship of the NCTC.

When contacted, Gorka and a National Security Council official did not comment. The Office of the Director of National Intelligence, led by Tulsi Gabbard—a close ally of Kent—referred all questions to the White House. A White House spokesperson said any nomination announcements would come directly from the president or administration.

Why it matters

The potential appointment of Gorka to lead the NCTC occurs as the U.S. counterterrorism strategy is under pressure from both internal dissent and external conflict escalation, particularly following the recent Iran war initiated by the administration. The role is pivotal in shaping the nation’s response to terrorism amidst shifting geopolitical dynamics and a policy emphasis on limited foreign interventions under the “America First” framework.
