Mexico Captures Jalisco Cartel Leader with $5 Million U.S. Bounty

Mexican military forces captured Audias Flores Silva, known as “El Jardinero,” a leading commander of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), in the state of Nayarit on April 27, 2026. Flores Silva was found hiding in a roadside ditch near the community of El Mirador, officials confirmed Monday.

The United States had offered a $5 million reward for information leading to Flores Silva’s arrest. He was considered a potential successor to CJNG’s former leader, Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, or “El Mencho,” who was killed in a military operation earlier this year.

Mexico’s Security Secretary Omar Garcia Harfuch posted video showing Flores Silva being taken into custody after emerging from a hole, noting that U.S. authorities seek his extradition. The operation involved reconnaissance aircraft, six helicopters, four planes, and over 100 troops.

Flores Silva was the CJNG regional commander responsible for security and drug trafficking activities in Nayarit, Jalisco, Mexico State, and Zacatecas. He previously served as head of security for “El Mencho” and was arrested in the U.S. in his youth, serving five years for drug trafficking before returning to Mexico.

Local reports in Nayarit documented incidents of car and business burnings following his capture, but Mexican officials stated no casualties occurred during the arrest. U.S. Ambassador to Mexico Ronald Johnson praised the capture as an important step in fighting fentanyl trafficking and dismantling criminal networks.

Why it matters

The capture of Flores Silva significantly disrupts the CJNG’s command structure, especially as the cartel was reorganizing after the February killing of its founder. The cartel’s extensive influence, with presence in at least 21 Mexican states and operations in about 100 countries, poses ongoing challenges for both Mexico and the United States.

Despite setbacks, security analysts caution that such criminal organizations can quickly adapt and continue operations, underscoring the persistent threat they pose.

Background

The Jalisco New Generation Cartel is Mexico’s most powerful criminal organization, surpassing others like the Sinaloa Cartel in territorial reach. The U.S. has designated CJNG and five other Mexican cartels as foreign terrorist organizations, emphasizing their threat to regional and international security.

Following “El Mencho’s” death, the CJNG incited increased violence, including attacks on businesses and vehicles, resulting in over 70 deaths. This arrest is part of Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum’s intensified efforts to crack down on cartel activities amid pressure for stronger law enforcement measures.
