U.K. Police Probe Arson Attack on Iran Memorial Wall in North London

U.K. counter-terrorism police are investigating a suspected arson attack on a memorial wall in the Golders Green area of north London, authorities confirmed Tuesday. The memorial displays photographs of individuals killed by the Iranian regime, and the incident occurred early Monday morning.

The Metropolitan Police reported that the memorial wall itself was not damaged. While counter-terror officers are leading the inquiry, police stated the attack is not currently being treated as linked to terrorism. The perpetrators remain unknown, no arrests have been made, and investigators are maintaining an open mind regarding the motive.

The memorial wall is located opposite a Jewish elderly care home on Limes Avenue. This attack follows earlier incidents in the same neighborhood, including the setting ablaze of vehicles belonging to a Jewish ambulance service last month. The paramilitary group Harakat Ashab al-Yamin al-Islamia, also known as The Islamic Movement of the Companions of the Righteous, claimed responsibility for those attacks as well as others targeting Jewish institutions across Europe.

A representative of the group later told CBS News that threats would continue against U.S. and Israeli interests globally until they had “avenged every child in Gaza, Iran, Lebanon, and the resistance nations.”

The head of policing in northwest London acknowledged community fears following the recent spate of attacks and emphasized the increased police presence: “Since last month’s attack in Golders Green, we have stepped up our work to reassure communities, including armed police patrols and deployments of officers from Project Servator, who are specially trained to detect criminal activities.”

The same group has claimed responsibility for additional incidents this month, including an attempted arson at a Persian-language media outlet’s offices in northwest London on April 15, and an arson attack on a synagogue in Kenton on April 19, for which a 17-year-old pleaded guilty.

Why it matters

This series of attacks has heightened tensions in Golders Green, an area with a significant Jewish population, and underscores ongoing security concerns related to antisemitic violence in the U.K. In 2025, the Community Security Trust recorded 3,700 antisemitic incidents nationally, marking the second-highest annual total on record.

Background

Golders Green has recently been the focus of multiple arson and hate-related attacks primarily targeting Jewish institutions and communities. Law enforcement agencies have responded by intensifying surveillance and security measures amid fears of escalating violence tied to geopolitical conflicts involving Iran and its proxies as well as tensions in the Middle East.
