NASA has appointed Brian Hughes as the senior director of launch operations, a position based at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Hughes will oversee launch infrastructure and operations at both Kennedy and the Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia, reporting directly to NASA Headquarters in Washington, D.C.
In his new role, Hughes will provide enterprise-level leadership and strategic direction to enhance coordination among government agencies, industry partners, and local authorities involved with NASA’s spaceports. His responsibilities include increasing the cadence of launches and supporting the execution of the President’s National Space Policy aimed at maintaining American leadership in space exploration.
NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman highlighted Hughes’s blend of operational experience and strategic leadership, noting his prior high-level government service and expertise in managing complex organizations as key assets for advancing NASA’s launch operations during a pivotal era of exploration and innovation.
Previously, Hughes served as NASA’s chief of staff, where he was instrumental in driving agency-wide priorities. Before rejoining NASA, he was deputy national security advisor for Strategic Communications at the White House, focusing on national security policy and communications.
Hughes’s background also includes municipal leadership roles such as chief administrative officer for the City of Jacksonville, managing over 7,000 employees and a multi-billion-dollar budget covering public safety, infrastructure, and emergency management. He was chief of staff to Jacksonville’s former mayor and CEO of the Downtown Investment Authority, leading economic development efforts.
A U.S. Air Force veteran, Hughes served as a KC-135 aircrew member during Middle East operations supporting the Gulf War. His return to NASA comes amid the agency’s expansion of civil, commercial, and national security launch activities across its spaceport infrastructure.
Why it matters
Hughes’s appointment arrives as NASA accelerates launch activities vital to advancing U.S. space exploration capabilities and sustaining competitive advantage in both civil and national security domains. His leadership is expected to facilitate smoother coordination across stakeholders and support increasing the frequency and efficiency of launches at key NASA facilities.
Background
NASA’s Kennedy Space Center and Wallops Flight Facility serve as principal hubs for the agency’s launch operations, supporting a growing portfolio that includes human spaceflight, commercial partnerships, and defense-related missions. The senior director of launch operations plays a crucial role in managing these complex activities to align with national space priorities and evolving technological demands.
